02What it really costs
Published tuition tells your family almost nothing. What matters is what people in your income bracket actually pay at that specific school — and what the degree earns afterwards.
What families in the federal income band yours falls in actually pay at each school after grant aid — not the all-families average — beside the published tuition, your likely contribution, and any gap left over.
Why it matters: The blended average overstates the cost to a lower-income family at a generous college by around six times. Families rule out schools they could have afforded, on a number that was never about them. Where the published figure isn't about you either — an out-of-state public quotes an in-state price — it says so rather than quoting you someone else's.
Real federal earnings data for your specific major at each school, with the national figure for that same major beside it.
Why it matters: A degree is not one number. Knowing what your subject pays at that school beats knowing what the campus averages.
